It gives access to Podcasts, Internet Radio stations and, once you’ve registered online, FlowSongs, which is Pure’s own music store. The benefit of a small TFT display over a traditional LCD display is that you can see more information at once. This means programme information, such as the name and artist of the current song, can be seen at a glance rather than waiting for it to scroll across. The larger display also makes it easier to browse radio stations as seven can be shown at a time as a list.

Pure Evoke Play is a portable, battery-powered music system that will happily accompany you all day long: From your al-fresco breakfast to a picnic in the park or a barbecue on the sports field - you can use anything from a DAB radio or FM receiver to Spotify Connect or Bluetooth Speaker for your smartphone to prove that the best playlists are yours. And even if they aren’t, the Pure Evoke Play, our compact sound marvel, will play along anyway. After connecting the radio to the mains or inserting the batteries a push of the knob will switch on the radio. The radio will scan for digital radio stations the first time that it’s turned on and subsequently return to the last listened to station. Its fun, bouncy sound works well with music and isn’t too harsh on the lower-quality stations doing the rounds on the DAB spectrum – some use such a low bit-rate as to be all-but unlistenable. Some voice-only broadcasts can make the One Flow sound a little too bass-driven – a tiny bit muffled – but it’s one of the best-sounding models of its size. It’s a pity there are no equalisation options available here, as having some basic control over bass and treble levels could have solved this small issue. A tap on the Listen Later button brings up a menu, where you set the time, recording duration, the frequency (once only, daily, all week days, weekends only and once a week) and the station to record. If you have a programme you listen to all the time – the Archers, or Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone perhaps – this will come in very handy, but it’s very constrained compared with what the old Pure Evoke 3 offers. That top-end model features a card slot, letting you archive recordings rather than just wipe them instantly. DAB/DAB+ radio is the broadcasting and reception technology of the future. The quality of the signal and, as a consequence, of the music received, is significantly better than that of FM radios. Even though DAB/DAB+ radios work without long antennae, their signal is much more stable and easier to receive.

Compared to traditional radio stations, internet radio offers a wider variety of programmes since it is not restricted by geographical boundaries. It also allows stations to reach a larger audience that is not bound to a specific geographical area. Furthermore, programmes can be saved to be listened to at a later stage. FM - when will it be turned off? The Pure Elan One has some welcome improvements over the Pure One Mi range. A larger full colour screen, a rotary knob for the volume and battery and mains power options are all useful updates. Compared to other budget radios the less shiny plastic finish makes it feel like a more premium product. So the Pure One Classic Series II is a pretty good all-rounder but there are obstacles ahead of it, and the most dangerous are – at the moment – its predecessors. The amendments made in this “Series II” adjustment are not essential, while the falling price of the old guard makes buying one while they’re still around seem very attractive. You can nab the first-gen Elite model for five pounds less than the Series II at present, and we’d rather have the sound quality improvements of its dual-speaker system than the rather limited recording skills of the Listen Later feature. If you’re willing to cut the ties with traditional radio broadcasting entirely, the Logitech Squeezebox still does significantly more – offering Spotify streaming, plus access to a handful of other services. However, the mix of new and old that’s within the Pure One Flow is arguably much more flexible. Find yourself without an internet connection? Switch to DAB. DAB signal start to act up? Step down to FM.
