The full review of the Apogee Symphony Desktop can be found in the May 2022 issue of Sound On Sound, as well as here. Like every flagship product we’ve introduced, Symphony I/O Mk II benefits from on-going expertise that constitutes the Apogee Engineering Advantage, once again pushing forward the state-of-the-art. Registered office: V12 Retail Finance Limited, Yorke House, Arleston Way, Solihull, B90 4LH. Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. In this article and video, Luke Goddard looks at the Apogee Symphony Desktop, a premium audio interface that gives professionals high-end performance from a compact system that fits in your bag. All 3 workflows fully functional in the ACFX plugin wrapper: Print FX, Monitor FX, and DualPath Link

Like every product in the Symphony line, Symphony Desktop benefits from Apogee’s core mission to design the finest performing audio interfaces using cutting edge analog and digital components, carefully selected by ear. While others cut costs and rely on conventional design approaches, we use innovative components and circuit optimization to consistently improve the performance of our products A/D Conversion - Faithfully capture every nuance By combining superior performance, with new features like mic preamp emulation, the Symphony ECS Channel Strip plugin and ultra low latency recording with hardware DSP and Apogee native FX plugins, Symphony Desktop will amplify your creativity in your studio or on the go and give your recordings the Apogee sound quality Advantage.A/D CONVERSION - Faithfully capture every nuance Similar to Symphony I/O MkII, Symphony Desktop’s analog-to-digital convertor stage features ultra-low distortion, high-slew rate, fully differential analog op-amps plus a cutting edge A/D convertor in a performance-enhancing dual-sum configuration. Create with the confidence that every nuance of your analog input is faithfully reproduced in the digital domain. However, in cases where the same manufacturer makes both DAW and interface, it can be possible to integrate the two much more closely. Avid’s Hybrid Engine, for example, automatically switches between DSP and native versions of a plug‑in depending on whether it is in a live input monitoring path or not, and UA’s LUNA has similar capabilities. Advantages: Simplest way to get a sound and not print FX in your recording Commit and Print While you Record

Symphony Desktop is also compatible with Apogee’s Dual-Path plugins. It uses the onboard DSP processing to host the plugins. This means you can monitor or print (record) using Apogee’s plugins with near zero latency. Dual-Path plugins can also be used natively ie. without the interface plugged in. Even if you don’t have access to your Symphony Desktop, you can still use the plugins in your DAW. For the musician, producer, or engineer who demands excellence in a portable, expandable footprint, the Apogee Symphony Desktop promises to deliver. What Do I Get With The Apogee Symphony Desktop? D/A CONVERSION - A widescreen window into your mix Symphony Desktop’s digital-to-analog stage employs brand new technology to provide uncompromising Symphony DAC performance in a portable product, including a robust ultra-low distortion, high-current output driver. Regardless of downstream connections, Symphony Desktop provides a transparent, widescreen window into the sonic landscape of your mix. This touchscreen affords access to all of the same settings you would typically find in control panel software. So, you can set input and output levels, manage routing and monitoring, and even configure the Symphony’s built-in preamp models and channel strip, which run on the unit’s internal DSP, all from the touchscreen. Dies eröffnet umfassende Bearbeitungsmöglichkeiten und ermöglicht es Benutzern, ihren Sound nach Belieben anzupassen. the DSP FX ( opto comp, pultech and Digital eq in particular) on the front end are extremely useable and With Symphony Desktop you have a range of intuitive hardware and software control options. From the touch screen and control knob on the device, to the control app on your computer to the focused input and monitor control plugin for your DAW, you can easily access the settings you need to stay in your creative groove. Designed to redefine professional portable recording This still doesn’t quite match the level of native/DSP cooperation that is available in Pro Tools with the Hybrid Engine, or between LUNA and Apollo, and nor can Apogee call on the same huge libraries of third‑party plug‑ins that are available in the AAX and UAD formats. But their implementation has the big positive of being largely platform‑agnostic, meaning it should work pretty well in almost any DAW. In that respect, it bears some similarities to the Waves/DiGiCo SoundGrid system, except that SoundGrid is really optimised for much larger setups.
