Michael Gambon is great as Inspector Maigret, and his subordinates and the bad guys are all great characters as well. International film star Bruno Cremer (The Octopus, Sorcerer) is unsurpassed as Georges Simenon's beloved Parisian Inspector in this long-running French series based on the bestselling novels. What makes the show hilarious is that he is the only one in each series who has any wisdom whatsoever. Other fictional detectives like Sherlock Holmes, and even Columbo are great at catching the culprits.

Episode 3 has maybe the oddest characters and the most unsettling atmosphere, which is saying something.Rowan Atkinson credibly transforms himself into the seriously calm and curious police commissioner Maigret who risks his life to find the culprits. There are at least two of them and since the 2:20, they've been trying to get me on my own so they can kill me. The best episodes of the first season, "Maigret Goes to School" and "Maigret Sets a Trap", do offer some fun, but they are weak and undistinguished efforts compared to other ITV mystery shows of the time and certainly when compared to the Bruno Cremer series. I’ve read all of the Maigret books and was disappointed that an author with such a prolific pipe collection did not reference a pipe brand or tobacco used by the character.

The other characters dance around him like complete imbeciles trying to trick him while he smokes his pipe and think that he isn't paying attention.Very French sometimes dark but love George Simeon an these movies are great if you like foreign movies It has sub titles but Bruno Cremer was the perfect Maigret. The entire series is presented in the French language, except when Maigret visits other places (such as Finland), or when someone from Scotland Yard joins Maigret in an investigation. The French series hews more closely to the original stories, and also has the advantage of the episodes being 30 minutes longer; it is also a more complete canon, with nearly 5 times as many stories. The Cremer Maigret varies in quality with the directors, but he is almost always brilliant, playing his hunches and guiding his investigations with a deep psychology that truly honors the original Simenon novels. Maigret stumbles upon a series of murders in Fontenay-le-Comte while visiting an old school friend in the Channel premiere of MAIGRET AFRAID (1996) starring Bruno Cremer on Tuesday at 9:05pm (31st October).

Michael Gambon is spot-on as Maigret, one of the best and most faithful to the books as a matter of fact. But that only accounts for a small portion of his total number of novels that he wrote, which are more than 250. The series has been remastered for HD TV and the picture quality is amazing compared to the original series shown on TV.

If those concerned in production are unsure about church customs then it is usually easy to find out for certain. I thought this was a good show to watch with subtitles to catch the French personal and place names. The DVD set includes two discs with two episodes and bonus material on each; the episodes are: Maigret Sets a Trap Disc 1-1; Maigret’s Dead Man Disc 1-2; Night at the Crossroads Disc 2-1; and, Maigret in Montmartre Disc 2-2. In short, there was no laptops at the time and Crémer had established his base camp at my neighbor for the practical side, I saw him 1 or 2 times come back and go out in the garden with his famous pipe in hand.
