Furthermore he confessed that he liked Bec McConn and while she was his prisoner he actually treated her with the same kind of affection he had shown Juni while she was alive. Grubbs is unwilling to agree, but Kernel and Bec convince him by saying that the world needs a evil, to remind them of what's good and making Lord Loss promise not to allow major crossings. When he mentally heals enough to cope, he finds himself sheltered by his long-lost uncle, a man who knows more than he's telling, but who is willing to tell it as soon as Grubbs wants to listen. However, he did not wish any of the group that destroyed the tunnel to live (although Bran survived).

This is the only occasion on which he has shown genuine care for a mortal, and it is implied that the two may have shared a romantic relationship. On opening his bedroom door, Grubbs finds not the bedroom but Hell and the dead bodies of his father, mother and younger sister, all murdered by Lord Loss and his demons. When he goes to find out what's wrong he finds all of them dead, brutally chopped up by demons in their home. Turning to look he sees Dervish, with his senses regained, holding a tin of paint and a woollen scarf. Then Grubbs realizes that Lord Loss is feeding on his despair and then decides to play with an aloof attitude. They are not mouthpieces to tell kids what the author believes is wrong with the real world now, like so many YA books are right now.

I won't spoil anymore and just say that the last half of the book is as good as the first half, and the climax is delightfully unique.

Though they are his bitter enemies, Lord Loss allowed Disciples to live on multiple occasions, seeing greater sorrow in their futures. After Grubbs recovers, he lives with the rather eccentric Dervish in his mansion near the village of Carcery Vale.
