We understand that all children have different abilities, and some pupils may struggle with reading and need more specialised texts.

Weekly content grids, lesson templates and ‘How to’ videos all help to ensure that all adults maintain consistency in their teaching and this is monitored half termly by the Reading Leader and SLT so that any misconceptions or inconsistencies can be rectified as soon as possible. The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters.If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. Our training is available online and on-demand throughout the year and we run Welcome Zooms and Reading Leader training every week to get schools started. This system judges the level of difficulties based on how many letters per word, how many words per page, how many lines per page, how many pages per book not on reading progression. However, we know that spelling is harder than reading and so we would expect schools to continue teaching spelling by applying the alphabetic code and rules about suffixes in Year 2 as detailed in the National Curriculum. Teachers will ensure children have a balance of skills across the week and over each term so that they have opportunities to develop their complete reading skills. We aim for the majority of Y1 pupils to pass the phonics screening test (at least in line with national figures). Parents will also be invited to attend a phonics meeting with the Phonics Leader in the Autumn Term. Reading Leader training is provided regularly throughout membership via live webinars, recordings and other coaching support.

Phase 3 includes ai ee igh oa oo oo ar or ur er ow oi ear air and double letters (‘ure’ has been omitted but the most common ‘ure’ words sure and pure are included as tricky words in Phase 3). At WGPS we believe reading is essential for academic success but, more importantly, we value reading as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers.
