Welcome to The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts – a luxurious, clandestine college dedicated to the fine art of murder where earnest students study how best to “delete” their most deserving victim.

One of the things that I missed at first that really would have helped me was knowing that this book is set in the 1950s as I struggled for a while with the time setting. The hardback edition has beautiful foil stamping on the cover and end papers with a lovely map of the McMasters campus. Rupert Holmes’s New York Times bestseller, Murder Your Employer (the first volume in his new McMasters Guide to Homicide series), was also a Top Ten on the Indie Bestseller List, the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Houston Chronicle, and Associated Press. He managed to ruin Cliff’s career, have his best friend murdered and make the girl Cliff liked commit suicide. The writing drew me in from the beginning and the personalities of the characters were established rather quickly and easily.

Wonderful writing style narrated by the brilliant Simon Vance and delightful Neil Patrick Harris in the audiobook edition, which rounded off this intrepid and engaging story of revenge. But then the book kind of deviates from its entire concept: it being a manual and it including written reports of these students. The beginning very much felt like a Harry Potter-esque tale (minus the fantasy elements) where you are whisked away to an unknown place by someone claiming to be your sponsor / secret guardian. Posts include homicides, missing and unidentified people, wrongful convictions, and forensics as related to these cases. Sure, one or two were expected, but to see how we got there was even more delightful than the actual event itself. The three students are: Cliff Iverson, an aircraft engineer for Woltan Industries, Gemma Lindley, an administrative executive of St. Newly-divorced and facing an uncertain future, she impulsively swaps her London Life for the sweeping hills of the Yorkshire Dales, determined to make a fresh start. I enjoyed some of the banter and perspectives, which added something to the larger reading experience. A funny, fast-paced, flip-the-playbook mystery in which three ordinary citizens are trained in murder on a luxurious hidden estate .
