If you press only once, you will see a blinking light, and you will be in “record pause” – in record pause, you aren’t yet recording. To silence this subject once and for all, multiple sources from the music creation department actually told me that cables do make a difference, and studios do rely on different cables for different jobs. Maximum recording time is dependent upon the card size and file type: for example, a 2GB SD card can hold approximately fourteen hours of stereo 320kbps MP3 files, three hours of stereo 16-bit / 44. Slightly too large to consider “pocket size”, the Zoom H5 still fits easily in your hand, and weighs less than your average cup of takeaway coffee.

The pick up is better than my NTG2 shotgun mic and that NTG is also improved when plugged into the H5. Once connected, the user can choose to use the H1n as a card reader for file transfer or USB microphone for direct recording or live podcasting. A rotary gain controller, with guard to avoid accidental adjustment, is positioned on the top of the microphone base for easy adjustment. This allows you to connect up to four discrete signals from external microphones, instruments, mixers, or portable music players to fully realise your audio vision. The only feature I'd like to see the manufacturers add is auto-off, or sleep mode, after a user-selected idle period.Once connected, the user can choose to use the H2n as an SD card reader for file transfer or USB microphone for direct recording or live podcasting.

You can change the gain by using the two wheels at the front, for the XLr inputs, or the wheel on the XY mic module at the top, to change its gain. Usually, after you set it up, you just record to a microSD card, and you just press the record button two times. I use it for field recording capturing random sounds and ambiences to use in my music, and when paired with a decent fluffy wind-shield (not the foam one that comes with the H5! For example, the supplied XYH-5 interchangeable microphone capsule can be used to record live performances.I read manuals before using a product, but I was slightly confused by the multi or stereo recording functionality - however, following the instructions fixed this immediately. Two-channel stereo mode combines the Mid, Side and X/Y microphones; the four-channel mode records two separate stereo files which allows for post-production capability. Main FeaturesStreamlined body with matte finish and newly designed protective mic enclosureOne-touch button controlsBuilt-in stereo condenser microphones in 90 degree X/Y stereo formatSupports up to. PROS (compared to H4N): Lightweight; Very quick start; Menu navigation much quicker; I like the protected potentiometers on the front - much easier to adjust than the side dial; Easy card access - instead of going through battery pack, dedicated slot. THAT SAID, the recording quality on the H5 is remarkably higher than the previous brothers, the sound is just more naturally "in your face" and easily verges on a studio-like sound.
