The fact that you can run in any way and at any speed in the New Balance Fresh Foam X 880v12 is a liberating thought and one I'll always appreciate.

I do think a more dialed in and structured upper would improve the connection between foot and what is an excellent underfoot ride. It's not bothersome to have two different densities, but in all honesty, I don't see the point in having a dual-density foam when the singular version works perfectly fine. However, this does not discount the 880 from being a good shoe and may just go to show that sometimes less is more. The Fresh Foam X is lively and fun, and the layer of Fuel Cell provides a higher density in the forefoot that feels great when some speed is injected into the run.

My first miles in the shoe were pleasant with nothing that gave me an “oh my “ moment just a dependable daily trainer, but let’s dive into that a little bit deeper. The extra volume does not extend into the toe box, so those with a wide foot may still need to look at width options. The front Fuel Cell is a touch “firmer” in feel and as it is denser but of the same firmness as the Fresh Foam.

The collar is decently padded with an achilles hold tab that eliminates pressure while providing a comfortable secure hold. I wouldn’t rely on the 880 as my weekly workout shoe however as it requires more effort to keep the shoe going fast. This friendlier edition should prove more versatile for a wider range of runner types especially those seeking a bouncier softer feel in a daily trainer. The 880v12 also makes for a good walking and work shoe thanks to the soft (but not squishy) Fresh Foam X and comfortable upper. oz lighter with an almost identical stack height and 10mm drop the Puma is also for sure a “traditional” daily trainer in geometry and ride. Overall, the New Balance Fresh Foam X 880v12 is a daily workhorse shoe reserved for daily mileage but is able to pick up the pace during a mild tempo run. mm forefoot platform the latest Wave Rider is somewhat more cushioned overall, weighs about the same and has a much more pronounced impulse forward from the yet higher drop and its plastic Wave plate.

Both have fine true to size uppers and extensive durable rubber coverage although I find the Mizuno’s deeply decoupled heel easier to roll forward. A model that continues to be a safe valor for neutral runners looking to face long distances on asphalt.Sam: The v13 sees essentially no visibly apparent changes yet its upper is now more secure while fitting about the same, its overall ride slightly firmer and more responsive due to a change in the firmness of the outsole rubber, a significant improvement for me if a bit overdone. The New Balance 880v12 fits within the New Balance shoe lineup as a neutral (more traditional) workhouse daily trainer and a cousin to the more “premium” New Balance 1080. Because of the upper and to a lesser extent the ride the V12 now leans more towards the easier side of daily training whereas the v11 leaned more towards a somewhat faster paced side of the spectrum. A blown rubber outsole completes the Fresh Foam X 880v12, supplying a sticky grip for multi-directional traction.
