United Artists label as per this version but it also includes the printed inner sleeve with German eagle in light blue on silver background not shown in the pictures here. Rhythm section Lemmy and Simon King are present throughout, Lemmy's contribution can not be understated, hiss trademark rhythm bass ties the whole sound together magnificently. Calvert must have felt a strong affinity with them as he too was unreliable, difficult to control and unstable as hell. For an album made in the early 70's it does not sound in the least dated, with Eno and Hawkwind's Del Dettmar on synths a track like 'Gremlins' (which also has a superbly effective guest vocal from the 'God of Hell fire' - Arthur Brown) moves into proto techno territory.

The concept was based on the German Air Ministry's purchase of the Lockheed F-104G Starfighter, which was eventually nicknamed Widowmaker by Luftwaffe pilots. It was these severe structural modifications which rendered the jet unstable and difficult to control.

I have this original version with insert containing lyrics and dialogue stapled to inside center of gatefold. mainly concerning a dubious fantasy theme around the reconstruction of the glorious German Luftwaffe. This concept album deals with the tragedy that occurred when American made Lockheed Starfighter jets were purchased in the sixties by the West German Air Force in a supreme act of folly. The only non-Calvert composition (co-written with Dave Brock) “The Widow Maker” follows, and it is pure Hawkwind: all churning guitar and Rudolph’s (or Lemmy’s?Well, this excellent concept album not only has an expanded track listing, it also has a great insert / booklet which includes an essay and reminiscences by Nik Turner, who also played on the orginal 1973 recordings. The Widow's Song" was included in the libretto and Calvert had hoped to record it with Nico singing. It's the effective combination of rock and Monty Python skits where the true power of the album lies.

The storyline of the record is political and related to the time when album was written, focusing to a case when German government bought jet fighters from the America. The spoken word parts do move the story along and are somewhat humorous in parts, but they also sadly reveal Calvert's crumbling mental state Oddly enough, Arthur Brown appears as the Gremlin who ultimately takes down the Starfighter's plane. It's a satirical concept album with both songs and spoken interludes based on the story of the poor quality of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter planes. Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters is the solo debut by Robert Calvert, the former singer of the space-rock band Hawkwind. I think this realistic theme is interesting subject for contrast of more abstract cosmic operas, though Hawkwind also has had political themes on their agenda. The song writing is superb, the music rocks hard, if you need a reference point, well known Hawkwind track 'Urban Guerilla' is very representative of the sound and would not sound out of place on this album.

The music's ok in a generic Hawkish way and its a potentially interesting subject - did the US knowingly offload the potentially lethal (to the pilot) Starfighter jet on Germany - but the sub Monty Python "Ve haff vays of making you talk! Both music and storyline are more sophisticated and serious than in an average Hawkwind album, maybe because Robert had more control over the production. Former Hawkwind bassist Alan Davey revives the Psychedelic Warlords, including frontman Craig High, keyboardist Zoie Green and guitarist Simon Wilkins, for an acid trip down memory lane on this spectacular live recording! And I am hugely impressed, previously, I had the Hawkwind album around Moorcock's works, and that was fun also as a space opera. overalls onstage at times during his Hawkwind days) saw the headlines generated by Lockheed’s abysmal legacy surrounding the Starfighter F-104 as creative stimulus. Between the music there are humoristic dialogues of German officials inspecting the army, businessmen doing trade with Americans and some excerpts from pilot conversations from a Starfighter cockpit. If you like everything about Hawkwind, and need to have as much as you can relating to the band, then this may be as essential to you, as it is to me.
